PPF on boats: what to check before applying over gelcoat

Vessels aren't cars. Advice for applicators on how to approach PPF on the exposed sections of boats, what to watch for over gelcoat and why one roll spec simplifies the work.

On vessels the exposed sections take the brunt of abrasion, UV and salt — superstructure, edges, glossy gelcoat surfaces and painted details. PPF belongs here for the same reason it does on a car: the elastic layer absorbs impact and protects a surface that is otherwise hard and expensive to repair. The key is a film rated for marine use and a substrate prep tailored to it.

Gelcoat behaves differently from automotive paint. It tends to be more porous and often carries traces of polishing and waxing. Before application the surface must be thoroughly degreased and stripped of silicones from previous upkeep, or adhesive grip won't match what you know from paint. It's worth running an adhesion test on a small offcut before you cover a large area.

Choose a material that handles both cars and boats from one spec. Our flagship self-healing PPF is rated for vehicles today, and we'll extend the same spec to vessels as we launch the Marina division, so you won't have to stock two roll lines. The 15 µm self-healing layer closes fine scratches with heat, and the >R10 hydrophobic surface makes upkeep of areas exposed to salt water and weather easier.

Elongation around 270 % is crucial on hull and superstructure — the shapes are rounded and wrap over edges. Work in logical panels, plan cuts so seams fall into the shadow of the vessel's lines, and reckon with the real yield of a 152 × 15 m roll. On large continuous areas consider the wider 183 cm format to cut down on seams.

The manufacturer warranty holds for vehicles today if you do the install and follow the substrate prep — and we plan to bring the same warranty model to vessels once we launch the Marina division. The goal is to give the customer a comparable level of coverage to a car — a hydrophobic, self-healing surface that holds gloss and protects the gelcoat from abrasion and UV. A transferable warranty and predictable material behaviour are exactly what will separate a professional application from improvisation.
