How to judge a PPF roll before you put it on a customer's car

Before you switch material, prove it out by test. We walk through what to check on a PPF roll — self-healing, hydrophobicity, elongation, thickness and what the warranty actually covers.

An applicator doesn't buy film off a datasheet — they buy it based on how it behaves on the bench. Before you switch material and offer a warranty on it, it pays to prove the roll out by test on a scrap panel or an old hood. The points below are what we ourselves measure before a roll makes it into the catalog.

Elongation decides how the film handles mirrors, leading edges and double curves. A premium PPF at around 270 % elongation can be pulled over a complex shape without whitening and without wanting to spring back. Take an offcut, stretch it over an edge and watch whether the material holds or cracks and whitens — you'll know within minutes.

Verify self-healing with heat. A quality top layer (15 µm on our Ace films) closes a fine scratch after warming. Make a light scratch with a nail edge or microfibre, run warm water or a heat gun over it and watch how fast and at what temperature the surface recovers. Cheaper materials heal slowly or stop altogether as the top layer ages.

Measure hydrophobicity and gloss right after you install the sample. Water should sheet off in beads (R9–R10+) and gloss should hold around 97 GU with no orange peel. Note the values so you have a comparison a year later — yellowing and dulling are exactly what later complaints are made of, and as the applicator you pay for those.

Finally, read what the manufacturer warranty actually covers and on what conditions it holds. A lifetime or multi-year warranty is only an argument for the customer if you, as a certified applicator, can pass it on. Check the thickness (our flagship PPF is 190 µm), the layer construction and whether the film removes cleanly after years without damaging the paint — that's the first question a customer will ask you.
