Coloured PPF: wet vs. dry apply and when to reach for which

Colour change and paint protection in one. We compare wet and dry apply of coloured PPF from the applicator's side — technique, speed, shades and warranty.

Coloured PPF combines two things the customer used to handle separately: a colour change and paint protection. Unlike ordinary wrap vinyl, this is a self-healing protection film, so as an applicator you can put a multi-year manufacturer warranty on a colour wrap. The choice between wet and dry apply then decides how you approach the job technically.

Wet apply (Wet Apply Color) gives the tech time. The application solution lets you position and fine-tune the film before squeezing the water out, which suits large flat panels and less forgiving shades. Wet Apply Color offers 22 shades and carries a 12/8-year warranty (by climate zone). You work more slowly but have more control over the final lay-down.

Dry apply (Dry Apply Color) is faster. The film goes on without solution, so there's no waiting for it to dry and the install moves quicker — an advantage on more complex panels and with higher studio throughput. Dry Apply Color has 23 shades and a 10/7-year warranty (by climate zone). It does demand a surer hand, because the room to reposition is smaller.

Both are self-healing coloured PPF on a 152 × 15 m roll, so cut planning and yield are the same as with clear PPF. What decides it is the type of job and the team's habits: large areas and newer techs often benefit from wet apply, while an experienced team on complex panels appreciates the speed of dry.

Whichever you pick, you sell the customer one package — a new colour and paint protection with a warranty. That's a different position from a cheap wrap that lifts at the edges after two years. It pays to have both variants set up and switch between them per job; you keep one roll spec in stock and only the lay-down technique differs.

Premium PPF at a sensible price.
